Tales of Brave Ulysses

After work yesterday I drove slightly tipsy to look at an apartment that's available for sublet for two months. That would take me through the heart of winter, a winter so cold I'll have no choice but to look for warm places to meet people and to work on my music and writing. Then off to Acadia to listen to Mary's set - we met at the 331 last trip up. It was pretty good! I really enjoyed her lyrics and her pronunciation of "heart". And then off to the 331 to listen to the Roe Family unamplified and catch up with Adam. It was a little hard to hear them, Q was out with food poisoning, etc. I joined them for a song but my voice was hoarse from screaming at the wind all day from my cardboard box.

Will I ever get around to bothering Zander? Now that I can do it any time I want it seems like less of a priority.

Ah! Back

I am sitting in Spyhouse early on a Monday morning managing my various online personalities and drinking coffee. There's a pound of sumatra sitting in front of me ready to ship off to a friend that I've somehow done wrong by. I'm dehydrated - a day on the road drinking coffee and eating beef jerky left me dried out. This'll be a first: me in the ham offices without Bret being there. What will happen? Who knows.

If it hasn't been said before, myspace sucks donkeys. Not any part of the donkey, the WHOLE donkey. Fox needs to invest some money into redoing the damn thing and doing it right. Anyways, back to looking for a place to house myself through the winter - last night in the cardboard box was rough.

Back to waking up in the middle of the night and not getting back to sleep. Terrible.

Zelienople Show

Howdy folks, the Zelienople boys will be playing a late set Thursday night at Gunther Murphy's in Chicago, with a bit of instrumentation from Dodd Billyans ("BALLS!!!!"). And Odawas will be playing too! Be sure to get there early and buy lots of CDs and t-shirts.

Z Boys

The boys from Zelienople were interviewed for the Reader last Sunday. Check out the article in section three this week! Got back early this morning, slept, went to Old Navy with Matt and picked up some really nice slipper shoes and met one of his cousins who was working the register. So many Christensen's about - you'd think they were Irish or something (note: they are Irish). After that I ate a Gyros plate and napped, woke up, got some supplies and here I am.

What a fun trip I've had. When I got back there was a card from T. I guess it's time to get off my duff and hustle up some gigs for Idyllville and do more recording.

Fergus is still meowling. He's lost his best friend and brother and is inconsolable.

Home?

Time to fill up the ipod with a new set of tunes and hit the road back to Chicago! After a week here it feels like I've never been anywhere else, so going back will be like a little adventure. I can explore the city, figure out where to get groceries, etc. Today I'm taking Max out to lunch to pry bits of info about his upcoming trip out of him (and also to get him properly fed. you're so thin! eat! eat!).

Just Another Minne Monday

Upon hitting Snelling Avenue I felt like a different person - almost like I had never left. I had expected Dave to be home working on H*****, but he was at Aesthetic Apparatus screen printing posters. On 1st Avenue I walked past someone who looked awfully familiar - "are you a cartoonist?" He was in fact a cartoonist, but I have no idea where I'd seen him before. He hadn't participated in 24 hr, or the cartoonist conspiracy, and didn't know anyone I knew. It was one of those weird things.

The Roe Family Singers were in fine form, and Charlie Parr's playing has stirred my interest in alternate tunings. I got carded pretty seriously, which is kind of baffling as I was wearing my fake moustache which apparently makes me look younger (like a kid wearing his dad's suit jacket) rather than older.

I wonder where your postcard will come from...

So This Is Goodbye

I don't normally talk about work but Dave and Greg put together a nice little web app with a lot of potential for funny for the Junior Boys and it's not getting the traffic I had hoped it would. Visit, turn off the music if you don't like it, and participate.

So This Is Goodbye

And for god's sakes, be funny.

Thursday!

Well, it's Thursday. Ye olde Minneapolis itinerary is filling up, with gaps left in for extra hours of work. Things I don't know that I'll have time for:

* Bother Zander.
* Refresh my coffee supplies and sit and doodle at Spyhouse.
* Visit Big Brain Comics.
* Browse Cheapo Records for musical treats.
* Curse Dunn Bros. - then go in for a cup of coffee.

Sigh. Such is life! Going through the five stages into the sixth stage - giddy anticipation.

Wednesday Night

Fergus is now in full mourning. He keeps on calling for Rufus but no one responds. This is absolutely the worst timing for another week away. If there had been more time I could have borrowed Archer from Brian so that Fergus could get acquainted with him and see if they could get along, but it would be too risky now. I wonder if I can find a home for Fergus as I'll be gone quite a bit and he goes a bit nutty without company.

I popped online when I got home and there's Maxeem on Messenger, working away at writing a press release to promote his novella. Nearly spotless writing - only one questionable item, and that a suggestion from someone else. Donnovision 1.0 will be turning into Max-o-max with some help from Shad and I'll be looking to find a home for Sammy, the old laser printer.

On Monday I went to the Chicago chapter of the International Cartoonist Conspiracy's meeting at Clark's on Lincoln to see how the mix compares to the Minneapolis branch. The first thing I noticed was down here, I don't know anyone. Second, the skill range seemed a lot closer in this bunch and much more focused on cartooning. Third, the gender mix is about even instead of mostly male. I aim to take little breaks during the day to doodle so I can sharpen my skills back up, work on simplifying my lines and expressing more with less.

Saturday was the weirdest day. First thing was Rufus on the floor barely breathing, barely alive. Then a rush to the vet, and then Rufus passing away. It was weird because sitting there I thought I heard him meowing, but it ends up it was a dog. Rufus was very dog like. He barked, he played fetch. At PetSmart today I was tempted to take home a cat that looked like him.

Idyllville

I've written an amusing script that spits out poetry - not good poetry but it could be confused for something written by a human being: Idyllville.

The Hawthorne Melody

Well, today's show day. Throat's a little sore - a lot of flus and colds flying about. The lineup is me, Mike and Matt. Past this point I'll be retiring a lot of songs and reworking others as I transition back to being The Hawthorne Melody or some other name, and possibly even add members to the band in a loose kind of way.

Kerouactacular

"We gotta go and never stop going till we get there."
"Where we going, man?"
"I don't know but we gotta go."

Thinking about it, I don't have to actually physically be at work, there's a ton of bad weather coming, and there's a lot of places I haven't been where I could be. Car, guitar, macbook, ipod, cell phone, a sturdy but comfortable backpack and my camera. If I get bored I can do rude caricatures in exchange for sluggings on sidewalks. The digital hobo, mad for life. Out on the road!

It would be great! Yeah! What do I say?

Lost Day

Practiced today with Matt and Mike and then slept, slept hard, for five hours, and it was dark outside and I felt like I was the only person left on the planet. Fortunately Panini Panini is open until late on Sundays so I bicycled over and made a little headway into "Word Freaks" with a V8 and a couple of small but bottomless cups of coffee. There's something very unpretentious about Panini Panini that's nice, but the coffee isn't anything special.

Help!

The only place in town I could find a DVD copy of The Beatles' Help! was Facets on Fullerton. The movie is out of print, Best Buy and Target don't sell it, Blockbuster and Hollywood don't carry it. On Amazon you can get a copy for the low low price of $134.90. You'd think that for a band as popular as The Beatles finding a copy of Help! would be easy, but then you'd have another think coming.

Blah.

Practices scheduled. Bills paid. iMac dual monitored. Web hosting consolidated. Emails winnowed. Glasses fixed. CDs from Cheapo ripped to computer. Song mixed down and posted. Contact made with Chicago 24hr comic event organizer. Tired. Long work day. Must sleep.

Sunday Evening

It's only been a day I've been back and Minneapolis already feels like a long ago trip. Spent the day fighting traffic getting errands done. Went to Michelle's birthday party. Bought some groceries, spent a little time on the elliptical machine. Got my broken eyeglass frames replaced.

Another Doodle

After a couple of hours I started remembering how to cartoon with ink - it's been a good eleven years since my last intense cartooning phase (which makes me how old?):

Turning the Corner

Friday was a long night, what with the Ham BBQ and then a stop at the First Amendment gallery opening. Anna said that there's a duplicate of her and Shad's house a block north of their place that's for rent but I'm thinking I'll probably try to stay closer to work and Uptown next time back as it'll more than likely be snowing by then. In the morning I realized I still had the Rapid Park card and stopped at Dave's to drop it off, and ended up chatting for an hour or so about Ham.

And here I am again, back in Chicago, covered in cats and typing into a little window on a computer screen, organizing my trip photos and notes. Here's one of the doodles I made while the more dedicated were making their twenty-four page comics:

Love You In The Fall

I don't know if it's just a Minneapolis thing but they're playing "Love You in the Fall" from Paul Westerberg's new soundtrack album quite a bit, and I'm liking it a lot. I also heard a new song from Sonic Youth while driving today and liked it. It seems like my late 80s/early 90s favorites are producing some nice new music.

It was to say the least an interesting night last night. I hung out at the "More Than 23 But Less Than 25 Hour" comic event at Book Arts, then off to Jamey's party which was a very nice party, then around 3 am back to Book Arts. Then back home for a few hours sleep. Then back to the Book Arts - I arrived at about 9:15 and most of the cartoonists had gone off to sleep. Adam and I picked up Rita and had breakfast at Bryant Lake Bowl - delicious potatoes but the Eggsadilla wasn't anything special.

It's been a busy week but this next week looks to have a few late nights at work. I'm seriously thinking about going back to the mac camp after a number of years favoring windows. That'll complete the Beetle/iPod/MacBook trifecta. Probably no more posts for a while, have fun wherever you are.

The Stars of Track and Field

It's one of those clichéd Belle and Sebastian mornings plotting my trip to Minneapolis. With any luck I'll be able to stop frequently on the drive up to take photos. It would be even more super super if the parts to fix my powerbook arrive today or tomorrow so I can bring that along. Hopefully my back will be fine again mid next week and my rusty old knees will be able to handle a bit of running - if I can find a track I'll probably start on that so I can get a sense of where I'm at with my endurance.

More Songs

Probably shouldn't have started recording again but here are a couple of decent recordings of a couple of standards from the ol' Donn Ha Music Conglomerate catalog:

Nothing
Porn Star

Miss Misery Morning

It's a Miss Misery morning here. Slept a good 11 hours last night - I've been running myself ragged. As I left the Hideout to see if there were a way to sneak into the Smog show (which a little bird said would have Joanna Newsom as a super secret guest) a guy came up and asked if I had a ticket or wristband to give him. I sold it to him for the price of one dreadlock. Other transactions this weekend - three cigarettes to the man who was willing to hop on one leg 50 times.

Got rear ended by a woman, odd experience that. I watched in my rear view mirror as her car skidded a good eighty feet. I even pulled ahead twenty feet and she still wasn't able to stop her car, although as I pulled ahead there was no traction at the start - I put it down to oil slicked rain.

Baby NegaDonn Is Born!

NegaDonn's beautiful son was born on September 7 at 3:32 a.m. He weighed 6 lbs., 12 oz. and measured 22.5 inches long. Of course, this leaves me in the lurch as to whether any of the Negas will be at the Hideout street festival... but now I can shave off my mocking moustache of two days' growth.

Commune

Well, I've just finished Maxeem Konrardy's Commune and it was an excellent read. A little slow in the middle as they're exploring but towards the last third very gripping as the story becomes clearer to the reader. I've been a little slow in finishing as I was anxious to be out and about during the holiday, but tonight's a more mellow night and well suited to some gripping science fiction, which it was. The art style falters here and there with representation of adult faces, pacing is as said excellent except in the middle. This of course is just my perspective as a reader as I can only make a doodle here and there. It's a little pricey due to the printing method: "...the ink is vegetable-based and the energy used in transportation is offset by wind energy investment." So if you want a good read, and are willing to pay a bit of a premium for ecologically aware production, get yourself a copy today.

Three Hundred

Ha ha! Three hundred flickr views! Mwahahahahahahahaha! Dave of course has 700+. Sigh. And by the way have you seen this super cute picture of me I took this morning? heh heh heh...

My neighbor Jacqueline was at the coffee shop so I chatted with her during lunch. She was there with one of her fellow furniture-mongers. During this coffee chat a strange woman came outside with a juice and paper and the manager followed her out and told her they were fifty cents. After some argument the manager took the paper from her and left. "I get treated like dirt 'cause I'm Sicilian," the strange woman muttered. "This place is worse than Starbucks. I'd rather be at Starbucks." I pointed out that there's a Starbucks in the Dominicks on Clark and Howard at which point she said that she hated that place even more than the corner coffee shop, although she did have a favorite Starbucks further north but then she'd need bus fare.

Sleep + Music

Seven hours of glorious uninterrupted sleep, back feeling good, hair full and shiny. Attained a level of proficiency with photography where I'm not totally embarassed. Starting to feel like recording music again - there's many more songs from the 16+ year Donn Ha Music Conglomerate back catalog to record plus the new songs. A couple of the recorded songs that have been sitting on Matt's computer will be posted soon - "Porn Star" and "Some Days".

And So Ends Tuesday

Yawn! What an uneventful day, and now soon to sleep. Reaction to the new photos has been mixed but I'm fairly satisfied with my advances - I'm able to coax decent enough pictures out of my little digital camera. What subject matter should I tackle? Should I go about looking to impose a theme on the world? I dunno. I've got the funny idea to turn the photos into grotesque oil paintings. Painting's one of those areas that I haven't dabbled in for some number of years.

It seems that I am nearing catching the elusive Greenberg - a friend of apparently many friends and a person who has provided music for a number of Ham projects, some of which I worked on.

Oy

This is the longest weekend of my life. It's only Sunday morning and it feels like a week's gone by and there's a month until it's over. Last night I went to the South Union Arts to see a show and got some fairly satisfying pictures.

Sleep

Whatever Charlie did at the Rainbo to my back worked - or at least I'm attributing my five solid hours of sleep to her expert ministrations. I woke up this morning with a diffuse pain and stretched it out side to side. NegaDonn's sister's boyfriend sold his book to Random House and now needs a book cover. He apparently has the right to say "no" to an illustrator/cover but no one was sure if he could suggest a cover/illustrator. I of course suggested the fabulous Kevin Cannon who has in the past ceased to amaze me then amazed me at how I could cease being amazed.

Yesterday on my way to the Hopleaf I stopped at the little used book store on Jarvis and found the perfect book for *******'s photo project - she's going to convert the book into a holder for photographs she's taken.

**** really isn't as inscrutable as I'd thought - he's actually just right up there on the surface as far as I can tell. In any case, I'm going to put on some going outside pants and take some photos of the shoreline.

NegaDonn

NegaDonn is growing a moustache - he's going to let it grow until the baby arrives. I was mocking it at first then I found out it was one day's growth. I've gone a whole month and haven't had whiskers that thick.

Get Back

Just on the off chance that it might do something I took some sleeping aids, but seeing as it's 3:42 am and I'm wide awake I don't think the stuff worked. I'm getting the feeling it's a combination of things - back pain and fine Minneapolis coffee, perhaps although I don't know how it could be, TOO MUCH fine Minneapolis coffee. I need to find an alternative to coffee, perhaps iced coffee, or coffee with cream and sugar. Whatever the case I need more solid blocks of rest.

I'm really enjoying this little photography hobby and flickring. I have no natural talent at photography and it's pleasant having to try, fail, try try try, fail fail that's okay fail and receive feedback and advice from people more skillful than myself.

Monday Monday

I have napped. I have stretched, had a light workout, eaten my evening vegetables and sausage. Finally got around to cleaning up after Thursday's movie night and set back up the recording equipment although tonight's not a recording type of night. I want to write a song like Harvest Moon, a love song but not a mopey song. I feel like running - not running away - I feel like putting on some sneakers and taking these tired old knees and running until I can't think but only feel my breath drawing hard and my shirt damp against my back. I almost feel like stopping smoking.

Thursday is supper with NegaDonn (Chris) at the Hopleaf. His wife is due in September so it's time to get while the getting's good. Shad sounded good today, and he looked happy and rested in his wife Anna's photos.

moosic

It seems that during my depressive musical bout I scheduled a performance at Uncommon Ground. Sunday, October 22nd, 8pm. So far I'm the only person on the bill but well worth seeing if only to watch me squirm and sing with my eyes closed. Weis and Christensen are on board and Norborg is tentatively on board but the baby's due in September so I won't force him to keep his word on backing me.

My back was better this weekend but I must have twisted it again during the night and am now in pretty bad pain again - it may be time to go see a doctor so I can get addicted to pain medication. I feel like travelling, maybe to Seattle. Get away for a bit, take some pictures, drink good coffee. This weekend felt like a Velvet Underground weekend... this morning is Joy Division because I'm so happy! Wait a second... this stuff is depressing...

Photography

Motorcoat has totally blown me away again. He was out early this morning to the Minnesota State Fair and took some gorgeous pictures. I was out yesterday around downtown Chicago and took some middling pictures. Out of the hundred I took only a few of them were worth posting, although I posted ones that were marginal as well. This morning I stopped at Mike's and his advice was to take a lot of pictures.

Last night I went to see Adam's band and was pleasantly surprised - I went in raw and didn't know what to expect exactly. Gene made it too and we talked about the good old days - them in the Handicraft Guild and me moping about the Handicraft Guild eating doughknots and drinking coffee.

I went for a wade in the lake today and came back with a rash that ran in a streak up and down my right arm. After a nap I'm ready to finish up some tweaking on some files we're delivering Monday and to do some cartooning! Yeah! I know there's things that I'm leaving out, but I know that I'm leaving them out.

Dilettante Donn

Dear Diary,

Today I am off to downtown Chicago to take photos. While Garage-a-Thon 2006 has been cancelled, I'm figuring I'll stop at a garage sale on the way down, as I've been to only three this year and haven't found enough interesting stuff.

This morning is a Dunn Bros. morning and good lord is it delicious. Murder as many coffee shops as you want Dunn Bros. (other than Spyhouse) just never stop roasting those delicious beans daily. In my birthday box of coffee was a Dunn Bros. travel cup - I will use this with pride and no lingering bitterness. It seems I'm going through a pound a week of good coffee supplemented as needed by the Seattle Mountain Costco coffee, so if Adam was able to pick me up a pound of Spyhouse on his way out of Minneapolis I should be okay until I can stock up again.

Sequential Art Documentary

Hey folks, if you're into comics visit www.sequentialartmovie.com. My friend that I talk with as much as anyone but have never met in person is working on a documentary about comic books, which looks to be pretty good and is in English, not Norway-gian. We worked on some stuff when I was in my Illustrator cartooning phase so I've been a little gunshy about talking about Espen. Like Charlie Brown I'm fine with a pencil but not so good with ink or virtual ink. Mike and the Zelienople boys are open to providing some music for the soundtrack - I've always thought they would be good on a soundtrack, but for a movie about things decomposing in time lapse.

Blogarama

Well, it seems like it's about time to work on relaunching doodlehead. I've put it off for a number of months until I could shake the music bug out and am now ready to put my design hat back on and get back to it. So, no more blogging on doodlehead and back to blogging here. I'm thinking that since I'll be in Minnesota for the local 24 hour comic day I may participate in that if I can get the days off (it goes from 10 am to 10 am) unless I can finish my 24 hour comic in 12 hours.
